This Wednesday evening against Atlético de Madrid, the SL Benfica did not do it in half measures. For this meeting on the second day of the regular phase of the Champions League, Bruno Lage’s men largely won with a clear and flawless score of 4-0. The Colchoneros, who were coming out of an eventful derby against Real Madrid (1-1)have completely taken on water in the den of the Lisbonites.
The Encarnados’ great evening began with a first goal from Kerem Aktürkoğlu. Arriving this summer from Galatasaray, the Turkish international opened the scoring in the first quarter of an hour of play, on a serve from Fredrik Aursnes. After a first half dominated by Benfica, Diego Simeone made three changes upon returning from the locker room. But these brought nothing since his team conceded their second goal in the 52nd minute of play through Ángel Di María. The world champion was responsible for converting a penalty obtained by Greek striker Vangélis Pavlidis.
From then on, the Benfiquists never stopped attacking against a totally apathetic Atlético team. Free from any marking, Alexander Bah came to score his team’s third goal following a corner well taken by Jan-Niklas Beste (75′). Finally, Orkun Kökçü was responsible for transforming the penalty obtained by the spinning Zeki Amdouni, author of a very beautiful entry.
SL Benfica’s waves continued to fall on Jan Oblak and his teammates, who could, with a little more bad luck, have suffered three or four more. Thanks to this historic victory in the club’s recent history, SLB has six points in this regular phase of the Champions League. On October 23, Benfica will host Feyenoord and could, in the event of a victory, ensure that they are almost qualified, at least, for the round of 16.
