Statement by the Prime Minister on the appointment of Mark Rutte as NATO Secretary General

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today issued the following statement regarding the appointment of Mark Rutte as Secretary General of NATO:

“The cornerstone of transatlantic security for 75 years, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) defends democracy, peace, security and the rules-based international order. As a founding member of NATO, Canada has participated in almost all of its missions.

“Today, when the Alliance is more united than ever, I would like to congratulate Mark Rutte on his appointment as NATO Secretary General. His extensive experience and leadership on the international stage will be an asset to the Alliance as it works to preserve peace and prosperity around the world.

“In response to Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, NATO Allies joined forces to mount the largest collective defense effort in a generation to promote stability and security in Central and Eastern Europe. Canada is committed to continuing this essential work, including assuming command of the NATO battle group in Latvia.

“As Russia continues its war of aggression and the world faces new security threats, NATO remains steadfast. I look forward to working with Secretary General Rutte to defend the security of the Euro-Atlantic region, strengthen Canada’s role in NATO, and bring the members of the Alliance even closer together.

“I thank former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg for his leadership and partnership with Canada over the past ten years. I wish him much success in his projects. »
