The French automobile market is not at its best. For the fifth consecutive month, a clear decline was noted, particularly among national manufacturers Stellantis and Renault.

The French new car market recorded a fifth consecutive month of decline in September, with marked declines at its national manufacturers Stellantis and Renault, according to figures published Tuesday by the Automobile Platform (PFA).

Renault and Stellantis fall

After a clear decline in August, the number of registrations fell by 11.07% compared to September 2023 according to the PFA, which represents manufacturers and equipment manufacturers. With 139,004 cars registered, the market is doing even worse than September 2022, when factories were slowed down by shortages of electronic chips.

Over the first nine months of 2024, with 1,265,905 registrations, the market is down 1.76%. The French No. 1 Stellantis recorded a clear decline (-17.52% and 25.9% market share), visible in particular on its Citroën and Opel brands. The Renault group is also declining (-14.27%, 24.4% of the market) with poor sales at Dacia. The Volkswagen group is holding up well (+4.3%) while Toyota (+19.2%) is benefiting from the success of its hybrid models.
