Barack Obama: “Dikembe Mutombo, an incredible basketball player, inspired young people in Africa”

Former President of the United States, Barack Obama paid tribute, on Monday, September 30, to the memory of basketball player of Congolese origin, Dikembe Mutombo, who died the same Monday.

Barack Obama recalled that Dikembe is “one of the best shot blockers and defenders of all time.”

This African-American political leader also highlighted the positive impact of the basketball player from Kinshasa on young Africans.

« He also inspired a generation of young people in Africa, and his work as the NBA’s first global ambassador changed the way athletes think about their impact off the court. Michelle and I are thinking of Dikembe’s family and all those who knew and loved him », Wrote Barack Obama on his Twitter account.

Dikembe Mutombo, iconic figure of the NBA and member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, died this Monday, September 30 at the age of 58 following brain cancer.

It was NBA Commissioner Adam Silver who announced the sad news about the NBA’s X account.

Mutombo Dikembe died surrounded by members of his family.

Voted best defender in the NBA four times, he left his mark on the history of his sport and his country.

Former Congolese basketball player Mutombo Dikembe received the “NBA World Ambassador” or “NBA Legends” award in English.
