Ligue 2 (J7) – Back on the podium, Guingamp and Picard cool !

Full match for EA Guingamp this Monday evening at the end of the 7th day of Ligue 2 against SM (3-1)! A success which allows the Breton club to return to the podium thanks to an excellent Hugo Picard. On the other hand, Malherbe relapsed after a period of improvement and remained stuck in the second part of the table.

The summary

If the Guingamp supporters caused a small false start with a throw of toilet paper on the goal in front of the kop to protest against the matches during the week, the Breton players came back the best in this part. Siwé, in great form since the start of the season, was the first to light a fuse but his shot was harmless for Mandréa (4th). Untenable, the En Avant striker then rose higher than everyone on a corner placed by Ghrieb to place an unstoppable header and start this meeting on an excellent basis (1-0, 7th). Caen’s response would not take long, but Basilio was attentive to a good attempt from Gomis (12th). The only one from this first period. Still unable to muzzle Siwé, Malherbe then conceded a new opportunity after a cross from Maronnier, where Mandréa had to lie down again to avoid the break (15th). In a good dynamic, EAG continued its pressing and Grhieb again brought danger into the area with a cross shot cleared at the last minute with a header by Traoré (25th).

Author of magnificent long shots and 4 goals this season, Hemia had the opportunity to stand out just after a hard tackle (29th), but this time his attempt from 25m did not find the target (31st). Unleashed, Guingamp again called on Mandréa, who had to intervene on an attempt from the left by Labeau (34th), then on the following corner in front of the Breton number 9! The 1-0 was even a miracle, when Grhieb found the Caen post after a powerful recovery in the area (37th). In a central midfielder role, Hemia showed a lot of clumsy commitment and avoided a second warning which seemed obvious for a sole on Gaucho’s ankle (45th).

Mendy strikes as soon as he returns from the locker room, before the Picard festival!

Upon returning from the locker room, Caen showed a different face. While Labeau took too long before hitting and was blocked by Henry (48th), Alexandre Mendy did not miss the chance to equalize with a header from a free kick placed by M’Vila (1-1, 51st). The SMC top scorer was left strangely alone by the Breton defense on this one. Asleep since the restart, Guingamp would wake up in the most beautiful way. Shifted to the left in midfield, Picard performed a solo festival before switching to his right foot and finding the small opposite net from Mandréa (2-1, 67th). A splendid goal! But again, EAG missed the break behind and again came up against a good Mandréa, when Sagna, freshly entered, was ideally offset by Labeau in the area (74th). Ripoll’s luxury joker, Luvambo reinforced this status and again found the net a few seconds after coming into play, opportunistically exploiting a ball messed up by the defense and Siwé (3-1, 79th). In added time, Le Bihan headed a cross from Lecoeuche to give Roudourou a final thrill, without consequence (91st). This controlled success allowed Guingamp to climb onto the podium on goal difference, while Caen fell back and remained stuck in the second half of the table.

Fact of the match: Hemia should have seen red

If Guingamp copiously dominated the first period and reached the break with a logical advantage on the scoreboard, its midfielder Amine Hemia came close to being sent off and would have deserved not to be able to finish the first act. Indeed, his first yellow card for a scissor tackle on Brahimi could have already earned him a direct red (29th). Warned, the former player did not draw any conclusions and was then the author of a big sole on Gaucho’s ankle. Surprisingly and despite the impact, M.Lissorgue did not draw the 2nd yellow just before the break. A good star for EAG, a largely understandable bitterness for Malherbe who would not have been against numerical superiority to curb the Breton enthusiasm.

The Tops of the meeting

  1. Jacques Siwé (EAG): Highly visible since the start of the season, Jacques Siwé once again had a solid match with the quick opening score with a header from a corner. Very available and powerful in the game, he created two other good chances and could also have been a decisive passer on a delivery towards Ghrieb whose recovery hit the post. He also causes Gaucho’s yellow card in the second half.
  2. Hugo Picard (EAG): If the attacking midfielder is full of qualities, his room for improvement is perhaps in terms of statistics. And while Guingamp fell asleep in a false rhythm in the second half, Hugo Picard took it upon himself to switch to detonator mode to wake everyone up! An absolutely magnificent solo goal with a right-foot strike from the opposite net to bring an entire stadium to its feet and plunge Caen back into doubt. Great art!
