In Austria, traditional parties have disappointed voters who have turned to the far right.
Political analysts explain the success of the FPÖ by the clarity of its message and its firm stance on the issue of migrants which allowed it to differentiate itself from other parties.
Cengiz Günay, director of the Austrian Institute of International Affairs: “I think that migration itself is not the major problem. This is probably one of the most visible changes. This is why people resist it and react to it more emotionally. But the real problems are the crises in health systems, education systems and administrative systems. »
The last elections in France and Germany were also marked by the rise of far-right parties.
Until now in Austria, the Freedom Party, the FPO, has played a political role at the local level.
Today, the FPÖ is the largest party in the country and for the first time since the Second World War.
In 1983, the Social Democrats and Conservatives accounted for almost 91% of the vote. This figure has now fallen to less than 50%.
