With his victory last night, Tadej Pogacar became even more of a Cycling legend.
After his coronation in the road race of the world road championships in Zurich, Tadej Pogacar entered a very closed circle. The Slovenian won the Tour of Italy and the Tour de France this year and has just added the rainbow jersey to his purse, a missing title to achieve the prestigious “Triple Crown” in cycling.
At 26, Pogacar is the first runner in 37 years to achieve this feat. Irishman Stephen Roche won the “Triple Crown” in 1987, and Eddy Merckx did so thirteen years earlier (1974). This season, Pogacar won his first Giro and registered his name for the third time on the Tour list, after his victories in 2020 and 2021.
Questioned by our French colleagues from Le Parisien, the “Cannibal” is admiring of the Slovenian’s performances. “What he did is truly incredible. You have to be crazy to do that. When he attacked, I started to be afraid in his place. I thought he left too soon. Normally it is impossible to win after a 100 kilometer attack, but he did it. He is the best of his generation, there is no doubt about it.“, he explains.
At 79 years old, Eddy Merckx has seen it all, experienced it all. However, Pogacar managed to impress him. “Vou know, at my age, it takes a lot to bluff me. There he succeeded. I thought he could be world champion, I never imagined it would be like this. He’s really the greatest, congratulations to him.”.
