As part of the eighth day of La Liga, Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid faced off in an electric derby at the Civitas Metropolitano.

After a first period largely dominated by Real Madrid but marked by a lack of creativity on both sides, the second half offered many more twists and turns. From the first moments, Real Madrid appeared threatening with a cross from Dani Carvajal, narrowly missed by Vinicius Jr (1′). The Merengue club generally dominated the proceedings, creating opportunities like that of Federico Valverde, well saved by Jan Oblak (17′). However, Atlético showed that it was not to be outdone, notably with a first big opportunity in the 9th minute, where Julian Alvarez saw his shot saved by Thibaut Courtois.

The second half got off to a flying start, with Atlético putting pressure on with high pressure, disrupting Real Madrid’s recovery. After several missed opportunities, it was finally Eder Militão who opened the scoring in the 64th minute. On a well-played free kick, the Brazilian defender, free from any marking, adjusted Oblak after a cross from Vinicius Jr, helped by a lucky ricochet off the thigh of Marcos Llorente.

The match interrupted for 10 minutes

The match then took an unusual turn when objects were thrown from the stands towards Courtois, forcing the referee to temporarily suspend the match. After a ten-minute break, the match resumed with increased intensity. Atlético did not give up, and in the final minutes, Angel Correa, who entered the game, allowed his team to equalize (90’+5). Thanks to a long pass from Javi Galan, Correa dribbled brilliantly past Courtois before pushing the ball into the net. Although initially refused for offside, the goal was validated by VAR, allowing the Colchoneros to snatch a valuable draw.

In added time, Marcos Llorente saw red after a dangerous tackle on Fran Garcia, leaving his teammates to finish with ten men. Despite some final scares for both teams, the score remained unchanged: 1-1. This draw keeps Real Madrid three points behind FC Barcelona, while Atlético Madrid maintains its third place in the standings. A derby closed for a long time which finally offered a breathtaking finale.
