Football: Atlético and Real neutralize each other in a boiling Madrid derby stopped several minutes after projectiles were thrown

The Madrid derby was hot this Sunday evening. It even had to be interrupted for several minutes due to projectiles being thrown onto the pitch.

The Madrid derby between Atlético Madrid and Real at the Metropolitano stadium on Sunday was briefly interrupted in the second half for Atlético supporters throwing projectiles towards Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

The match was stopped in the 69th minute after the Belgian goalkeeper, who played for the Rojiblanco club, complained to the referee about having been targeted by his former supporters, who notably threw lighters.

Atlético coach Diego Simeone and several players tried to calm the angry supporters and the stadium speaker asked spectators to stop the throwing of projectiles.

The players all returned to the locker room, while Real had just opened the scoring a few minutes earlier thanks to their Brazilian defender Eder Militao (64th, 1-0). Images from Spanish television also showed Courtois being angry with his former supporters. The latter would have had difficulty containing their anger.

The meeting resumed around ten minutes later, after calm had returned to the venue. Atlético pushed to come back and ended up being rewarded, in stoppage time, with a goal from Correa (90+5).

This draw does not help many people since Real Madrid are three points behind Barça one month before the Clasico. After 8 days of the championship, Atlético de Madrid, 3rd, remains within reach of Real but is still 5 points behind the Catalans.
