When we recently brought you the news of the Official Twilight LEGO set, we dared even the haters out there to deny that it was a cool piece of movie merch. Unfortunately, there were probably more than a few anti-Twilighters out there who did exactly that. Yes, almost two decades after it was a pop culture phenomenon, Twilight is still getting hate, in fact, some of that hate is even making its way to the actors. But if you’re Robert Pattinson, that animosity just kind of rolls off.

Speaking to GQ Spain (in an article translated by Variety), Pattinson revealed not just that he was still hearing from the controversial vampire saga’s detractors, but what he says to them when he does.

“I love that people keep telling me, ‘Man, ‘Twilight’ ruined the vampire genre,’” says The Batman and Mickey 17 star. “Are you still stuck on that shit? How can you be sad about something that happened almost 20 years ago? It’s crazy.”

Look, to be perfectly honest, I myself am not exactly a fan of how Twilight handled the blood-sucking undead. But ‘ruined the vampire genre??’ I’m sorry, folks, I cannot take that kind of negativity seriously. As Pattinson points out, the Twilight movies are going on 20 years old at this point, with the first film having debuted in 2008. And not only is that a very long time ago, to his point, but we’ve also had so much incredible vampire storytelling in the time since! To name just a few examples, think about:

-

And taht’s barely even scratching the surface of all the fantastic vampire movies, shows, comics, novels, video games, and, hell, LEGO sets, that have been released in that time. As I intoned earlier, I don’t have skin in the game to defend Twilight, but if you come for all vampires, you better have a damn good argument.

And not for nothing, you should maybe make it to someone who’s not the goddamn Batman.

The Twilight saga is streaming (for free!) on Tubi now.
