After Von Ballmoos’ demotion: Zubi: “YB didn’t solve the goalie situation well”

Ex-Nati goalie Pascal Zuberbühler gives the YB managers a bad report in dealing with the goalies Von Ballmoos and Keller and says: “Von Ballmoos will now look for a new club.”

Shortly before the start of the 2025 football year, YB is making headlines. The new coach Giorgio Contini demotes regular keeper David von Ballmoos (30) and makes 22-year-old Marvin Keller the new number 1.

Zubi: “It’s bitter and hard for Von Ballmoos”

Ex-Nati goalie legend and blue expert Pascal Zuberbühler can understand the castling. It is absolutely legitimate that Contini chose Keller, “he meets a squad and has to choose his best team. And that’s what he did. It is normal that hardship cases arise. Sure, it’s bitter and hard for David.”

Keller is a worthy number 1 in the YB goal, according to Zubi, but Ballmoos’ demotion and this whole goalie hiccup could have been prevented. “Those responsible at YB didn’t solve the goalie situation well. Marvin shouldn’t have been brought back this season and kept on loan.”

But you did. And all of this together with Patrick Framework, Keller’s coach at FC Winterthur. Zubi: «And what happened then? The frame began to rotate, sometimes von Ballmoos was in the goal, then Keller again. That wasn’t the main cause of the sporting failure. But those responsible didn’t do it well.”

Not easy to find a new club

In September, YB extended von Ballmoos, whose contract would have expired in the summer of 2025, until 2027, with an option for another season. The signal was unmistakable: the club was relying on its own talent. “YB is bringing Marvin Keller back and at the same time extending von Ballmoos by two and a half years, I didn’t understand that either. YB doesn’t need two number ones. I don’t understand the transfer commission’s considerations at all.”

Now, a few months later, everything is different again from one day to the next. Zubi is convinced that von Ballmoos will not be satisfied with the bench. “I can’t imagine that he wants to spend time on the bench. He is ambitious and wants to play. To do this he has to leave YB. I’m sure his advisor has already taken action.”

But it won’t be easy for a master keeper like von Ballmoos to find a new club in the next few days. At least not in Switzerland. The goalie positions in the Super League are occupied, there is no need for action.
