The US aerospace company SpaceX has lost contact with the upper stage of its Starship mega rocket during a test flight. According to the company, engine anomalies occurred during the ascent into space.
“At this point, we can confirm that we have lost the (Starship),” explained SpaceX representative Kate Tice during a video broadcast after the rocket launch on Thursday.
Previously, tech billionaire Elon Musk’s company had successfully recovered a rocket stage for the second time. The Starship mega rocket lifted off on Thursday afternoon (local time) for a test flight from the Starbase spaceport in Boca Chica, South Texas.
According to the video transmission, the first stage, named Super Heavy, descended back to the launch pad in a controlled manner after the two rocket stages separated and was caught by mechanical arms on the launch tower.
