Daniil Medvedev vs Learner Tien live score: Australian Open updates as Katie Boulter knocked out after Emma Raducanu issues update on injury

Novak Djokovic practices for Australian Open 2025 with Andy Murray as coach

The Australian Open continues as Emma Raducanu booked a clash with second seed Iga Swiatek but Katie Boulter is out after falling to a three-set defeat to Veronika Kudermetova.

British No 1 Boulter could not progress to the third round for the first time as Kudermetova edged a tight contest. Boulter looked to have found the momentum, but Kudermetova raised her level in the decider, winning 7-6 2-6 6-2.

Earlier, Raducanu defeated Amanda Anisimova 6-3 7-5 but battled more injury problems during the victory. The 22-year-old played through pain struggling with her lower back, but Raducanu is hoping it’s just a “small niggle” after her preparations for the tournament were disrupted by back spasms.

Five-time grand slam winner Swiatek needed just one hour to cruise through, setting up a blockbuster match against Raducanu, who she is yet to drop a set against in three meetings.

Elsewhere, defending men’s champion Jannik Sinner dropped his first set since October against Australian wildcard Tristan Schoolkate, but the World No 1 recovered to win 4-6 6-4 6-1 6-3.

Last year’s runner-up Daniil Medvedev faces the American qualifier Learner Tien, while Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca‘s dream run on his grand slam debut is over after defeat to Lorenzo Sonego.

Australian Open: Daniil Medvedev 3-6 5-6 Learner Tien*

Incredible from Learner Tien! He breaks Daniil Medvedev again, and moves a game away from taking a two-set lead!

The lefty leans into a backhand and powers it down the lead to increase Medvedev’s frustration. His serve is being gobbled up time and time again.

But Tien is finding holding serve tough, too. Can he get over the line to take a big lead?

Australian Open: Daniil Medvedev 3-6 5-4 Learner Tien

Medvedev levels after another break of serve and then manages to hold for the first time in four games.

Medvedev should be able to get out of trouble in this match but Tien looks to be a super player.

It always becomes a bit different, though, when the qualifier or wildcard actually takes the lead against a top seed.

Australian Open: Daniil Medvedev 3-6 3-4 Learner Tien

Wow! The phenomenal Learner Tien breaks Daniil Medvedev for the third game in a row, to take the lead in the second set!

The 19-year-old wins a brilliant exchange at the net and then produces a stunning backhand lob to leave Medvedev stranded.

Medvedev launches his racket and receives a code violation (although he basically skimmed it along the court to avoid hitting anyone).

But this is sensational from Learner Tien. A set and a break up against the former World No 1.

Australian Open: Jannik Sinner through to third round

Jannik Sinner is asked by John McEnroe how he manages to handle his emotions and control himself on court.

Sinner laughs and replies, “I think we are different, me and you!”

“Everyone has their own mentality and I’m quite happy with my one.”

Without wanting to land himself in trouble with McEnroe, Sinner laughs: “I think we should end this here.”

Australian Open: Jannik Sinner through to third round

The defending champion speaks to John McEnroe on Rod Laver Arena.

“It’s always tough to play against someone I don’t know too well. He was serving really well in the beginning, better than I was. With the crowd it was an amazing atmosphere. It’s special for the Australians.

“But I have to be happy still with my performance. I don’t take things for granted and I’m very happy to be through to the next round.

“In every tournament there’s always [wildcards] who come in and make it tough. I can improve, yes, I was struggling with the wind at first. But I take it. It was a good chance to play the night session on a beautiful court. It was amazing.”

Australian Open: Jannik Sinner 4-6 6-4 6-1 6-3 Tristan Schoolkate

In the end, it was the briefest of scares. There did not seem to be too much of a gap between the World No 1 and World No 173 when Tristan Schoolkate led 6-4 3-3 midway through the second set.

But Jannik Sinner eventually found his level and closes out a dominant win against the Australian wildcard to continue his Australian Open defence. GAME, SET AND MATCH!

Still, the first set Sinner has dropped since October. Schoolkate can take some satisfaction out of that.

Australian Open: Jannik Sinner 4-6 6-4 6-1 3-1 Tristan Schoolkate

Australian wildcard Tristan Schoolkate comes through the longest game of the match and seven deuces to get on the board in the fourth set.

This match is surely beyond him against World No 1 Jannik Sinner, but he didn’t deserve to be bagelled and gives the home fans something to celebrate.

Normal service has resumed on Rod Laver Arena.

Australian wildcard Tristan Schoolkate was cooking up a storm as he took the opening set 6-4 against defending champion Jannik Sinner.

Midway through the second set, with the score at 3-3, Sinner had still yet to see a break point opportunity against the World No 173.

But Sinner has now turned it around. The World No 1 did find the break at last, and has run away with the third set.

After raising his level, Sinner leads 4-6 6-4 6-1 and is a set away from the third round.
