Muscat – In a move to enhance the tourism sector and safeguard cultural heritage, Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT) has announced tenders for development and maintenance of key historical sites. The initiative aims to attract more visitors while preserving the sultanate’s unique landmarks for future generations.
MHT is inviting proposals for restoration and upkeep of Bahla Wall, a Unesco World Heritage Site renowned for its historical and architectural significance. The ministry also plans to restore Barka Fort, built during the 17th century under Saif bin Sultan al Yarubi and Hamad bin Saeed al Busaidi, symbolises Oman’s defensive fortification legacy. The nearby Bait al Nuaman Fort, dating back to the same period, adds to the area’s historical significance.
Additionally, MHT is seeking proposals to create an integrated visual identity for Al Hajar GeoPark. The project aims to highlight the park’s geological and natural beauty, enhancing its appeal to both domestic and international visitors while promoting awareness of Oman’s geological heritage.
Bahla Wall, a 12km defensive structure, features towers, barracks, soldier rooms and cannons. It is accessible through seven main gates, including the historic Bab al Badi, Bab al Sili, and Bab Sabah Salem.
‘The ministry is looking for partnerships with private sector companies for development and management of these heritage sites,’ MHT stated.
Proposals for these projects must be submitted by January 19.
The initiative is part of Oman’s broader efforts to expand its tourism sector and protect its cultural and natural heritage. By developing these sites, MHT aims to elevate Oman’s standing as a premier destination for heritage and adventure tourism.
