Hannibal City Council discusses possible annexation

HANNIBAL (WGEM) – The city of Hannibal could expand its city limits in the near future.

A potential annexation is what led to the Hannibal City Council hosting a public hearing Tuesday night at city hall.

Many residents within the area did not take well to the idea, as the annex would effect Sherwood estates and residents on Clover Road.

It was made clear during the meeting that if this does go through, it could take anywhere from three to five years to complete.

The city’s main reasoning is protection, but the public views it differently.

“They are considered in the county, not in the city limits, and fire protection and police protection definitely get calls in those areas and we feel they should be incorporated into the city,” Hannibal First Ward Councilman Scott Haycraft said.

“We don’t wanna pay the taxes, that’s why we moved into the county,” said Linda Seals, Clover Road resident. “When you retire, you’re on a set income, half the people out there are, and others are the new people with young kids and their starting out. They don’t wanna do it either for a reason.”

Another concern brought up by the public was the transition of certain utilities and how many residents don’t believe the transition will be done in the correct amount of time.

If the annexation were to happen, it would roughly effect over 100 properties moving forward.

The council also stated that these meetings will continue to happen in order to keep getting the public’s feedback. No date has been set for the next meeting.
