JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes is sharing his thoughts about a proposal for a casino in the capital city.

Ward 2 Councilman Kenneth Stokes says the two main concerns of the people in his district are where the casino would be located and how it would impact crime rates.

Last month, a Mississippi House committee met to discuss ways to revitalize the capital city. Committee members, including former Governor Haley Barbour, say they believe a casino could help reverse the city’s economic trends and bring in more revenue.

The committee recommends the casino be within a mile or so from the capitol.

However, Stokes says he has been getting questions about the proposed casino from Jackson citizens.

“Concerns I have, what about crime,” said Stokes. “We must have some assurance that crime will not increase in the city of Jackson.”

Committee members say that locating the casino within a mile of the capitol building would create more job opportunities and attract more people to the capital city.

Stokes tells WLBT that the casino will be on the agenda for the next city council meeting. Stokes says he hopes questions like where the casino will be located can be answered.
