Pension reform: why is it at the center of debate?

The 2023 pension reform must increase the legal retirement age to 64. Why is it at the heart of negotiations between political parties?

The number of retirees in is 17 million. Each of them receives on average a basic pension of 1,512 euros net monthly. Cost of the bill each year: 387 billion euros, or a quarter of public spending, this represents six times the national education budget. Do we have enough money to pay? The answer is no, the system is in deficit of around 6.1 billion euros in 2024. This is not expected to improve in the years to come due to the aging of the population, because the model is said to distribution.

In 2000, there were 20 working people for every 10 retirees. In 2060, there will be 14 working people for every 10 retirees. In short, there will be fewer workers to pay pensions. To try to make up for the losses, the latest reform made a choice: to push back the legal retirement age.
