At the level of the region and the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, will certain measures affect pensions?

This Monday, many demonstrators took to the streets to defend pensions. Unions fear savings of three billion euros on pensions. But, while we still do not have a federal government, what about at the level of the region and the Wallonia-Brussels Federation? Will certain measures really affect pensions?

Yes, there are. An example: now, among teachers, the trend is towards contractualization. This means that appointments are becoming less and less frequent in the federation.

However, when you are appointed, you receive a higher pension, with significant differences which sometimes go from simple to double. Reducing appointments is beneficial for the state budget, but less so for the retirement of civil servants.

What is curious, according to UCLouvain finance professor Jean Hindricks, is that Flanders has not chosen the same direction. She continues to appoint her teachers and draw from the federal common pot.

However, as we all contribute to this common pot, we all pay for the pension of the appointed Flemish civil servants, while, on the French-speaking side, appointments are reduced.
