St. Anton continues to surprise: The American Lauren Macuga celebrates her first World Cup victory. Lara Gut-Behrami is 5th, Malorie Blanc is in the top 10 again.
The podium
- 1. Lauren Macuga (USA) 1:17.51 Minutes
- 2. Stephanie Venier (AUT) +0.68 s
- 3. Federica Brignone (ITA) +0.92
In recent years, the defining duel for the Super-G victory in St. Anton am Arlberg has often been Lara Gut-Behrami against Federica Brignone. This duel seemed to be repeated on the Karl Schranz piste this year. With the better end for the Italian, who distanced Gut-Behrami by 34 hundredths.
But as with the departure the day before, this tension was not enough for the script. When visibility temporarily improved, the race was restarted. First Stephanie Venier replaced downhill winner Brignone, then Lauren Macuga surprised, starting a new era with her ride.
In Beaver Creek, the 22-year-old narrowly missed out on her podium debut with fourth place. «I felt like I was late for some goals and was surprised at the finish. “It was definitely difficult, but I was also lucky with the visibility,” said Macuga, describing her trip.
The big names
Good Behrami,
who had previously won two of four Super-Gs in St. Anton, was knocked off the podium as a result and ultimately finished the race in fifth place. Nevertheless, she rehabilitated herself to 13th place in the downhill. “I keep making mistakes, it’s a shame,” complained the Ticino woman afterwards.
Meanwhile, the first podium finish since the comeback is coming
Lindsey Vonn
getting closer and closer. The 40-year-old showed the next furious performance with start number 31 and finished 1.24 seconds behind in fourth place. St. Anton had no luck at all
Sofia Goggia.
After the descent, the Italian was also eliminated from the Super-G with an appealing split time. Your speed record for the season so far: three podiums, two retirements.
The Swiss in the points
- 5. Lara Gut-Behrami +1.26 s
- 8. Corinne Suter +1.76
- 9. Malorie White +1.80
- 19. Jasmina Suter +2.10
- 20. Joana Hählen +2.12
- 25. Priska Ming-Nufer +2.75
- 27. Michelle Gisin +3.05
- 30. Delia Durrer +3.32
Corinne Suter celebrated her first top 10 place after recovering from a torn cruciate ligament. Immediately behind her was Malorie Blanc, who had sensationally finished second the day before. The Valais woman has thus completed two of three World Cup races among the fastest drivers. The other Swiss women clearly missed an exploit. After a strong upper sector, Michelle Gisin was able to just stay in the race after a diversion, but lost a lot of time in the process.
This is how it goes
The technicians are already in demand on Tuesday: the night slalom will take place in Flachau. Next weekend, top speed will be the key again. In Cortina d’Ampezzo there is a downhill and a super-G.
