As the L.A. wildfires continue to rage, mixed martial arts (MMA) fans are starting to wonder whether UFC’s upcoming UFC 311 card will go ahead inside Intuit Dome in Inglewood, Calif., which is situated just southwest of downtown Los Angeles.
It’s a trifling concern compared to the tragic scale of the ongoing disaster, which has thus far destroyed more than 9,000 homes on 35,000 acres, killing at least 10 people. Pacific Palisades has been almost completely wiped out and now the fires have spread to Hollywood Hills.
That’s just 10 miles north of Intuit Dome. And while the wildfires aren’t currently expected to spread to the arena, officials have canceled Wednesday’s Rod Wave concert and today’s (Fri. Jan 10th) Trinity-Mission League Showcase.
The next events on the Dome’s website: a Sat., Jan., 11, 2025, NBA game between the Charlotte Hornets and L.A. Clippers, a Monday game against the Miami Heat, and a Wednesday game against Brooklyn Nets.
And, of course, UFC 311 on Jan. 18, 2025.
Many events in the L.A. region have already been canceled for the Jan. 10 – 12 weekend as city resources are stretched to the limit trying to keep the fire contained and people safe. Depending on the status of the wildfires and the damage done to other parts of the city, it’s very possible that the city ends up canning plans to draw 18,000 people into the area for UFC 311.
Time will tell.
While Dana White is typically pretty bullish on pushing events through natural disasters, he’s already declared his intention to support the first responders in and headed to L.A.. Hopefully, the wildfires are brought under control soon and this doesn’t become an issue.
It’s hard to imagine what another week of fires like we’ve seen over the past days would do to the city.
