Moral endurance of Ukrainians tested after more than a thousand days of war

On the one hand, the strong resilience of the population. On the other, the increase in the number of voices saying they are ready for territorial concessions in order to achieve peace. The latest opinion polls published between December 30, 2024 and January 3 by the kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) say a lot about the uncertainty in which the Ukrainian population finds itself, more than a thousand days after the start of the Russian invasion.

The election of Donald Trump as American presidential candidate in November 2024 had a major impact on this state of mind. The Ukrainians hope from the elected president, who will be inaugurated on January 20, for strong and rapid decisions to put an end to the war, while fearing a reduction in military and financial aid from the United States. On the front, the kyiv army, lacking men and weapons, continues to retreat in the face of Russian forces, who are grabbing territories in the east at the cost of heavy losses.

Negotiate security guarantees

As Donald Trump's inauguration approaches, the comments of political representatives have changed significantly. Until now taboo, the prospect of territorial concessions to Russia to put an end to the conflict has gradually emerged. Volodymyr Zelensky called for “a just peace” in 2025, in his speech for the new year, without mentioning the liberation of the territories occupied by the Kremlin army as a condition.
