It's one of the unmissable events at the start of the year: Epiphany, with its famous galette des rois. If we eat it almost throughout the month of January, we sometimes have difficulty finding the exact date.
“The same date as last year?” suggests a passerby. And no, we don't always celebrate it on the same date. This Christian festival celebrates the arrival of the Magi and comes twelve days after Christmas (besides, the birth of Christ on December 25 is also a date which is debated!).
If Epiphany is generally celebrated on January 6, it can fall in the middle of the week like this year: on a Monday. But other countries like France – and therefore Polynesia – prefer to set the date on 1is Sunday in January.
A very practical convenience for Hippolyte, deacon of the Diocese of Papeete.
We have always celebrated a Sunday according to the calendar. It's rather practical for the Parishioners, for the people who come to celebrate Epiphany on Sunday.

But let's be honest, Epiphany is above all an opportunity to be greedy and enjoy a good galette des rois – and rather twice than once! They are generally cheaper in supermarkets. But for varied flavors, the pastries are even more creative: apart from the classic frangipane, it exists in chocolate, pistachio, hazelnut or even coconut banana flavor… You have to pay the price. Vegan versions also exist.
Some artisans choose to stand out thanks to their beans with mother-of-pearl, characters or miniature pastries to collect.
And there are mothers who don't have the means (because their wallets are exhausted in January) or have to deal with their children's tastes or allergies. This year, Augustine is showing ingenuity.
It's very easy for me because my son is allergic to many things. So I find alternatives every time. This year, I replaced the butter with vegetable butter, vegetable milk and even the eggs, you can replace them with corn flour.
