Married for more than thirty years to Stéphanie, Michel Fugain became the father of three children with her: Marie, Alexis and Laurette. Together, the couple had to go through one of the worst trials in life: losing a child. Unfortunately their marriage did not survive the death of their daughter Laurette, who died of leukemia in 2002. Following their divorce, the two former lovers even had very harsh words towards each other, notably Stéphanie who took very badly to the new relationship of her ex-husband who met his second wife Sanda, a Romanian 22 years his junior, in a piano bar just a few weeks after the death of their daughter. “I have absolutely no affinity with this woman for whom I have absolutely no respect, I think she knows it. It's very personal. There are things that cannot be done in life“, she confided to Jordan De Luxe in 2019 about Sanda.
For his part, the singer of the title The bird had also made very offensive remarks towards his ex-wife in the pages of the magazine Ciné Télé Revue. Referring to his new partner who has since become his wife, he confided: “At 60, I fell in love with the woman of my life, Sanda. I previously lived with another woman who gave me children. But, frankly, she was not the woman of my life. I didn't want to die with her, especially since at one point she told me that I wasn't her friend. Which shocked me. Love without friendship is a mistake.“Reflecting on his meeting with Sanda, he added that he had first been friends with her before falling into her arms. “When my daughter was cremated, I had to go to Reunion for a concert. It wasn't easy to sing C'est la fête right after that. But the show must go on. When I returned, I went to Corsica. And two months later, I came across Sanda. I had the sun come into my life. She caught me while I was in the water and brought me to the surface. That's why I call her my mermaid. She made me take my first breath of air and she transformed my life.“.
Michel Fugain madly in love with Sanda
In the show As an aside broadcast on Canal+, he added: “I came home, I heard her singing and I absolutely wanted to talk with her. We spoke, we started our conversation which still continues. She became a kind of indispensable friend because we understood each other. I was exactly sixty years old. I've known this woman for twenty years“. Completely under the spell, he also indicated to our colleagues from Evening Mag that his love for Sanda was “as strong as the first day“.
Stéphanie and Michel Fugain finally reconciled?
After the hurtful words, Stéphanie for her part put water in her wine and recently made more measured remarks about her ex-husband. “Yes, because it's the 20th anniversary, it's important and my children and later my grandchildren need to say to themselves… It's already complicated because a tragedy takes up a huge amount of space. […] My only priority was my son and my daughter, it was my children and my grandchildren who were going to grow up with these images, with these lacks.“, she said in front of Jordan de Luxe.
As a reminder, Marie Fugain, the eldest, was 29 years old, and Alexis, the youngest, 9 years old, at the time of Laurette's death. Stéphanie has always kept the name Fugain: “I believe it is the name of my children, of my missing daughter. I could have remembered myself by my maiden name, but I didn't want to change along the way and I have no shame in bearing my name. It's the name of my children, I don't at all want to dissociate this love, everything that it represents“. A love story which has not left only bad memories.
