While season 2 of Squid Game has just been released on Netflix, a detail from the series is causing French fans to react. Some Internet users have noted an auditory hallucination present in Korean music used during the Mingle game in episodes 5 and 6 of this new season.
In French, the chorus of the song gives the impression that we are hearing “Coucou les Congolais”. A feature that makes people laugh a lot on social networks, especially on TikTok, where many Internet users are having fun remixing this song and translating it entirely into French.
Korean children's nursery rhyme
Even if the sounds are very similar, the song used in season 2 of Squid Game actually has nothing to do with the Congolese. It is a Korean nursery rhyme called 둥글게 둥글게 (In the round, in French) inspired by another British children's song Ring-A-Ring O’Roses.
As Korean teacher Jimin explains on TikTok, the phrase we hear as “Hello Congolese” is actually “Doong-geul-geh, Doong-geul-geh”, which means “go around in circles “.
A fairly logical meaning since when the song is broadcast in the series, during the Mingle game, the participants must climb onto a platform that turns in circles like a carousel.
