A metal object fell from the sky in Mukuku village, Makueni County, Kenya on December 30, 2024.

SPACE – The incident occurred just before the turn of the year 2025. A strange metal ring, larger than a human, fell from the sky and landed in a village in Kenya, surprising the residents there. afternoon of December 30. The authorities said they had opened an investigation this Wednesday, January 1. The Kenyan Space Agency (KSA) for its part confirmed having observed “a metallic object fell from the sky and landed in the village of Mukuku, on Monday December 30, 2024, around 3 p.m.”.

According to the first elements provided by the KSA, the object is a ring measuring approximately 2.5 meters in diameter and which weighs approximately 500 kg. Residents of Mukuku, where the object landed without causing any injuries, quickly alerted the authorities. KSA members rushed to the scene to try to identify it, while a security zone was established around the object.

A “space object fragment”

The object that fell from the sky is actually a « fragment d’objet spatial », KSA said. More precisely, it was identified as a “launch vehicle separation ring”. “These objects are generally designed to burn up when they re-enter the Earth's atmosphere or to fall onto unoccupied areas, such as the oceans”wrote the KSA in a press release.

The debris was recovered by the KSA, and will be subject to further examination. The agency clarified that it is “from an isolated case”, which justifies the opening of an investigation. In particular, it seeks to identify the owner of the object.

Discoveries of man-made space debris have occurred before, such as in 2022 when part of a SpaceX Dragon capsule landed on a farm in Australia. Last year, an American family whose house in Florida was hit by a falling piece of metal sued NASA.
