The Belgian clothing chain JBC is removing some glitter items from their shelves after reports from customers that they leave too many glitter marks. A JBC spokesperson emphasizes to Nieuwsblad that the glitter is safe and that the situation has nothing to do with the new European legislation on the glitter ban, which came into effect on October 15, 2023 to combat microplastic pollution. The company is investigating whether there is a production error.
- JBC is recalling glitter clothing after complaints about loose glitter.
- The problem does not appear to be related to the new European glitter legislation.
- Customers can return the affected items for a full refund.
In an email to customers, the Belgian retailer indicated on New Year’s Eve that customers who experience loose glitter from the K3 collection can return them and get their money back. “While we love a little glitter, we understand that you don’t want to make everything and everyone around you sparkle.” The retailer concludes: “Because we attach great importance to the quality of our clothing, you can return this sweater and/or skirt to your JBC store and you will receive a refund.”
The Belgian fashion chain JBC often has a proactive attitude when it comes to customer service. The retailer, with more than a hundred stores in Belgium and Luxembourg, is known as a fashion chain that attaches great importance to education. For example, in 2021 the retailer removed all signs and references to boys and girls in its stores, following a study by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), which showed that gender norms can lead to stereotypical occupational preferences in both girls and boys.
FashionUnited has contacted JBC for more information about the glitter items, but has received additional information at the time of publication.
