Switzerland woke up to a blanket of snow on Monday morning. The white splendor led to traffic delays and fueled hopes for a white Christmas.
The latest developments can be found in the ticker:
11.23: Despite the snowfall this Monday morning: a white Christmas is likely to remain a dream in many parts of Switzerland. The snow has already turned into rain in the western lowlands below 600 meters.
Patrick Stierli from “Meteo Switzerland” says when asked by Nau.ch: “In the lowlands, most of the snow below 500 to 600 meters will probably have melted again by Christmas Eve due to the positive temperatures during the day.”
Only in the Bernese Mittelland and parts of the central Mittelland, where over ten centimeters of fresh snow fell this morning, is a blanket of snow likely to last until Christmas Eve. “In the altitudes above 700 to 800 meters, with the exception of Ticino, a white Christmas is probably certain.”
10.11: The snowfall also caused chaos in the canton of Schwyz. The Schwyz cantonal police reported around a dozen traffic accidents. No one was injured, and in most cases there was property damage.
40 accidents in the canton of Bern
09.51: During the morning rush hour, various accidents occurred on the roads throughout the canton of Bern. Most of them were accidents, a spokeswoman for the Bern cantonal police told the Keystone-SDA news agency. There was minor property damage, but no one was seriously injured.
There were eight traffic accidents in the Bern region and six in the Bernese Oberland. 14 accidents were counted in the Mittelland, Emmental and Oberaargau, and 12 in the Bernese Jura/Seeland area.
The situation is calming down in the city of Bern
09.16: Due to the snowfall, there were interruptions and delays on the Bernmobil public transport network on Monday morning.
Various bus routes have been temporarily suspended. The situation began to calm down around 9 a.m.
Only line 162 to Münsingen was still interrupted due to slippery snow. There were still delays on three bus routes. The trams all ran normally.
08.43: There are also restrictions in other parts of Switzerland: Due to a snow-covered road, the cantonal road between Welschenrohr and Flumenthal in the canton of Solothurn is closed.
Rail traffic at St-Imier BE station is restricted due to heavy snowfall.
08.08: There will also be snow chaos on the A1 on Monday morning: there will be a traffic jam between Bern-Brünnen and Mühleberg. The reason is a stationary truck, as the TCS reports.
Between the Wankdorf and Schönbühl junction, the road is covered in snow in both directions. Snow chains are required for trucks.
07.56: In Bern, the first bus routes have already been suspended due to the slippery snow. Lines 10, 19 and 21 no longer run, as can be seen from the website.
Bus service between Bern and Wankdorf on line 20 is interrupted. Bus service on line 28 is also partially interrupted.
“All other lines are still running, but at their own discretion,” says Bernmobil spokesman Didier Buchmann to Nau.ch.
Things are already critical at half past six. “The bus took ten minutes to cover a 100-meter route,” reports a reader.
There are also disruptions on the TPF network in Freiburg. “Delays and cancellations are to be expected,” it says on the website.
