Filipino darts player Sandro Eric Sosing has been diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome after being rushed to hospital from the World Championship at Alexandra Palace.

The world number 225 was forced to withdraw from his first-round match against Ian White on Friday after experiencing numbness and muscle pains.

Guillain-Barre syndrome is a rare neurological disorder that occurs when the body’s immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system.

Sosing remains under medical care in hospital following his withdrawal from darts’ showpiece tournament.

Sosing was attended to by medical staff at Alexandra Palace just minutes before his scheduled match was due to begin.

After reporting his symptoms, the Filipino player was assessed by on-site medical personnel before being transported to a local hospital for further tests.

His withdrawal led to a schedule adjustment, with Stephen Bunting’s match against Kai Gotthardt being moved forward.

Bunting, the number eight seed, went on to secure a 3-1 victory over his German opponent after initially trailing by one set.

The Professional Darts Corporation released a statement providing an update on Sosing’s condition.

“Sosing had reported numbness and muscle pains while preparing for the game, and after assessment by on-site medical staff was taken to a local hospital for further tests,” the PDC said.

“He has subsequently undergone neurological assessment and been diagnosed with having GBS Guillain-Barré syndrome.

“He remains under medical care in hospital but hopes to be able to travel home soon.”

The statement added: “Sandro would like to thank everyone who has enquired after his wellbeing for their well wishes and kind messages.”

Sosing secured his place at the World Championship after finishing as runner-up in the PDC Asian Championship.

The 41-year-old achieved a significant milestone earlier this year, claiming his first Asian Tour title in March.
