after injuring Donnarumma, Monegasque Singo apologizes

AS Monaco defender Wilfried Singo, victim of racist insults on social networks, publicly apologized to Gianluigi Donnarumma on Thursday after seriously injuring the SG goalkeeper during the advanced match of the 16e day of Ligue 1 Wednesday evening at the Louis II stadium.

“My action was obviously not voluntary”

“I would like to apologize to Gianluigi Donnarumma. My action was obviously not voluntary, but I was able to see subsequently that he had a significant injury to his face,” wrote the Monegasque on Instagram, before addressing the Italian directly: “I wish you a good recovery.”

According to images broadcast by PSG, the two players greeted each other in the corridors of the Louis II stadium after the meeting on Wednesday evening: “Everything is fine, calm down,” the goalkeeper then told the Ivorian.

A gesture “in the continuity of the action”, judged the referee

At the 17e minute of the match won by the Parisian team (4-2), Wilfried Singo did not control his gesture and crushed his crampons on the cheek of Donnarumma, who, with an open wound on his cheek, had to give up his place to Matvey Safonov.

Already sanctioned with a yellow card, Singo did not receive a second yellow card after this action which would have been synonymous with exclusion. Referee François Letexier judged that the gesture “was in continuity with the action” according to Parisian captain Marquinhos. He whistled a free kick in favor of PSG.

“Several days” of inactivity for Donnarumma

Staples had to be placed on the completely open cheek of Gianluigi Donnarumma, victim of “facial trauma with multiple wounds” as announced in the PSG medical update at the end of the meeting.

He will undergo “medical examinations” on Thursday and will have to remain inactive for several days,” said the Parisian club press release.

On Thursday, AS Monaco condemned “with the greatest firmness the unacceptable racist remarks of which Wilfried Singo was the target on social networks after the match against Paris Saint-Germain”, declared the club in a press release.

“These behaviors have no place in sport, neither on the field nor off it, and are in total contradiction with the values that the club defends,” adds Monaco, who “provides all his support” to his player.
