Mazan rape trial: Dominique Pélicot’s sentence to 20 years in prison is “deserved, what he did is just despicable”, says Dominique Vérien

The sentence of Gisèle Pelicot’s ex-husband is “deserved” for Dominique Vérien, centrist senator and president of the Senate women’s rights delegation. “What he did has no name, it’s just despicable, it’s torture,” continues the elected official from Yonne, at the Public Senate microphone.

Dominique Pélicot was sentenced to the maximum sentence of 20 years in prison by the Criminal Court late this morning, December 19. He was found guilty of raping, sedating and delivering his wife to dozens of men, filming her for ten years. According to his lawyer, Béatrice Zavarro, he has not ruled out appealing.

“This moves me”

For their part, the 50 co-defendants were sentenced to sentences ranging from 3 to 15 years, below the requisitions. The judges did not consider the aggravating circumstance of chemical submission. “It moves me. Who do we want to make believe that these men did not realize that this woman was not conscious”, annoys Dominique Vérien, “angry” at the sentences which she does not consider heavy enough.

The senator believes that the scale of the Mazan trial will make society “think differently”, “particularly on chemical submission, which we know is a scourge that affects everyone”. The president of the women’s rights delegation promises that she “will personally ensure that the Senate takes up this subject.” MoDem deputy Sandrine Josso – who had filed a complaint against Joël Guerriau whom she accuses of having drugged him – and RDSE senator Véronique Guillotin are also working on a joint report on the subject of chemical submission.
