TV face Ruben Van Gucht (38) took a positive breath test during a police check last weekend. This is confirmed by the East Flanders public prosecutor’s office, which has revoked his driving license for 15 days.
A police patrol stopped Van Gucht last weekend on the night from Friday to Saturday on the E17 highway, near Nazareth, in the direction of Kortrijk. A ‘Traffic Safe Night’ was organized in the province of East Flanders: alcohol and drug checks were carried out at more than 100 locations in the province of East Flanders. The police had set up several static checkpoints.
According to our information, Van Gucht was randomly picked from traffic after midnight by a mobile patrol. Van Gucht had to take a breath test, which was positive.
“It is true that a check showed that he was above the legal limit as a driver,” the East Flanders public prosecutor’s office said. It is not known how much alcohol Van Gucht blew. Various public prosecutors previously announced that they would take stricter action during this period in the event of a positive breath test. Anyone with more than 0.5 per mille of alcohol in their blood must now immediately surrender their driving license for 15 days in East Flanders. Previously, the public prosecutor’s office withheld the driver’s license for six hours if this was the case.
According to our information, Ruben Van Gucht would have been just above the permitted limit.
Ruben van Gucht does not wish to respond. The presenter was expected early on Saturday morning at the Rodenbach brewery in Roeselare, where he had to present the Radio 2 program ‘Weekwatchers’ at 8 am. That program, which was broadcast live, could also continue as usual.
Second screen face
It was the second time in as many weeks that a VRT face was behind the wheel with one too many drinks. After Tom Waes caused a traffic accident on Saturday, November 29, he admitted in a statement that he had had too much to drink.
The VRT then said that they regretted this: “This is really not possible. Our screen faces also serve as an example for the general public in this regard. We expect Tom to take responsibility and think it is important that he shows self-insight. We wish him the mental and physical strength for a speedy recovery,” said the spokeswoman after Tom Waes’ accident.
