Big flop for Kraven and The Lord of the Rings at the US box office

Only $11 million in three days for Sony's latest Marvel. It's not much.

We are very far from the huge boxes of Vaiana 2 and others Wickedwhich have set the theaters on fire since Thanksgiving across the Atlantic. Sony's Marvel spin-off Kraven the Huntermanaged to do even less than the – already not great – forecasts of specialists: the antiheroic action film has only grossed $11 million in just over 3,000 theaters since Friday.

It's less than Madame Web at the start of the year (15 million for its opening weekend) which ended its career with a meager 43 million dollars in North America and 100 million worldwide. The requirements will have difficulty doing so much. Hard, for a production of 110 million dollars.

Behind, it's not much better for the other novelty of the week. The animated film of Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrimonly opens in fifth position at the US box office. This prequel Tolkien'sdirected by anime veteran Kenji Kamiyama, settled for $5.4 million (in 2,600 theaters). This is not much for an object derived from the enormous saga in Middle-earth. But the budget being only 30 million dollars, expectations are minimal and the film will be reimbursed without problem internationally. The objective of the feature film was above all, for New Line Cinema, not to lose the rights to Tolkien's novels. The franchise LOTR will continue soon with a live film on Gollum – directed and performed by Andy Serkis – which will be significantly more ambitious.

Disney

Waiting for, Vaiana 2 continues to dominate the US box office, and has now grossed $337.5 million in North America, and crossed the 700 million mark worldwide. Wickedreleased a week earlier, is just behind with 360 million in the USA and 450 million worldwide.

Finally, Gladiator II enters the top 50 R-Rated films. Surpassing the Quentin Tarantino of 2019, Once Upon a Time… in HollywoodRidley Scott's epic totaled almost $400 million in revenue worldwide.
