Manchester United won the final Manchester Derby of 2024 with one player shining bright above all others.
Ruben Amorim was headed for a third Premier League defeat on the bounce, however his most valuable player stepped up to win the game for Manchester United.
City took the lead through a deflected cross, with Josko Gvardiol getting his head above all others.
But before and after conceding, United were clearly the team most likely to score – as the expected goals tally shows.
Eventually, this bore fruit as Amad Diallo won a penalty which Bruno Fernandes converted.
Moments after this, Amad scored a brilliant goal of his own to hand the Red Devils a derby day to remember, United won the game 2-1, with Gary Neville naming one player the clear standout.
Amad Diallo was sensational for Manchester United
In the game, there was a distinct lack of quality but any and all quality came from Amad, which saw Neville wax lyrical about him on commentary for Sky Sports.
Even before he scored, Neville raved: “I really like that right side, with Amad and Mazraoui. They look like they WANT to play.
“Every time he’s on the ball [Amad] he’s a menace.”
Neville labelled Amad the ‘shining light’, while also raving after Amad won the penalty: “He’s been Manchester United’s best player by a street. It’s really, really clever by him.”
Every week it looks more and more baffling that Ten Hag was so against using Amad.
Amad is Ruben Amorim’s biggest success story
It is early days, but Amad has taken Amorim’s arrival and not looked back with excellent performances week after week.
After the game, Roy Keane was on punditry for Sky Sports and he was in his usual mood as he argued he won’t be impressed until United do it again, but Amad was a recipient of rare praise.
“He’s been the biggest plus from the new manager coming in”, Keane explained.
Meanwhile, on MUTV, Wes Brown also highlighted Amad as the key factor in the win: “He’s an electric player”.
