In 2025 Chemnitz will be the European Capital of Culture. Katarina Witt goes on a journey through her city, to places that are important to her and that are significant in the Capital of Culture year. In a constant alternation of personal stories and encounters with artists, athletes, makers and prominent people from Chemnitz, Katarina Witt presents the diversity of the Capital of Culture 2025. She meets the artist Jan Kummer, who lives in Chemnitz and who co-wrote the application for Capital of Culture. He contributes a life-size sculpture group of Mickey mice to the Purple Path – the art and sculpture path that connects Chemnitz with the region. Actress Mai Duong Kieu came to Chemnitz from Vietnam in the early 1990s. Katarina Witt trains with her in her father’s kung fu school. The two women then discover the culinary side of the cultural region, for example how chocolates are made that taste like Chemnitz districts. A trip to the “Kosmos Chemnitz” cultural festival is also on the program. It is also part of the Capital of Culture year. Bands like Culcha Candela, Silbermond and the singer Soffie have already performed there and talk about the special vibe of the festival. Behind “#3000 Garages” is a project to which, in addition to numerous Chemnitz residents, Katarina Witt and discus throwing legend Lars Riedel contribute loans from their garages for the art installation “Spare Parts Store” in the Museum of Saxon Vehicles. A brilliant fireworks display of stories from Chemnitz and the surrounding area shortly before the start of the Capital of Culture year – charmingly presented by Katarina Witt.
