Sporting returned to winning ways, against Boavista (3-2). Playing at home, Alvalade’s team opened the scoring, but allowed the checkered team to draw twice. Even so, João Pereira’s formation managed to secure the three points thanks to two decisive goals from Francisco Trincão. Although the arbitration was, in general, without major cases, Fábio Veríssimo made a blatant mistake, which resulted in the opponent’s player being sent off.
Jorge Coroado, former referee, highlighted a capital situation in the 84th minute: a foul by Filipe Ferreira on Viktor Gyokeres which, in his opinion, should have been sanctioned with direct expulsion. However, the referee of the match did not even point out a foul.
“Filipe Ferreira, when jumping, threw his left leg, kicking Gyokeres’ lower abdomen. Direct free kick and red card that went unpunished”he wrote, in the arbitration section of the newspaper O Jogo, showing Fábio Veríssimo’s error.
With the result, Sporting remains at the top of the championshipbut is under pressure, as Benfica has two games in hand and can equal first place. This victory was important not only for the three points gained, but also for ending a negative streak, as the team coached by João Pereira had been losing four times in a row.
Clube de Alvalade returns to the field next Wednesday, December 18th, against the Azoreans of Santa Clara, in a game relating to the round of 16 of the Portuguese Cup. The match against the team led by Vasco Matos will be played at 8:45 pm, in Alvalade.
