On the sidelines of a government crisis unit, the new Prime Minister, François Bayrou, spoke about the situation in Mayotte after Cyclone Chido which hit the territory. For his part, Bruno Retailleau spoke of a dramatic situation.
Roofs torn off, streets devastated… The situation is dramatic in Mayotte. Significant damage was noted, notably at Marcel-Henry airport. The delivery of aid will thus be complicated. Faced with this situation, the new Prime Minister participated in an interministerial crisis meeting on Saturday, December 14 in the evening.
At the end of this crisis unit, François Bayrou spoke. At the microphone of BFMTVhe evokes a situation which “crosses several immediate and medium-term risk factors”. “The assessment is not very easy to do”continues the president of MoDem, who speaks from the Ministry of the Interior. “The days to come are very worrying”he said.
Bruno Retailleau fears the worst
Also present at the meeting, Bruno Retailleau regrets “dramatic climatic episode”. “We have an airport whose tower is destroyed, but the runway is passable”explains the resigning Minister of the Interior who announces the creation of an airlift from Reunion. Bruno Retailleau said he feared that the human toll “be heavy”.
However, he refused to provide figures at this stage. “To take stock, we must be able to go on the ground, to inspect the rubble, the precarious housing which has been totally destroyed”estimates the minister. “It will undoubtedly take days to refine the human toll, but we fear that it will be heavy”he adds, evoking a “dramatic situation”.
