Egyptian giants Al Ahly are on the brink of another historic milestone as they prepare to face Mexican side Pachuca in the FIFA Challenger Cup on Saturday.

With a spot in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final against Real Madrid at stake, the Red Devils are counting on a blend of youthful hunger and seasoned experience to deliver on the grand stage.

Leading the charge is Palestinian forward Wessam Abou Ali, who has had a sensational debut season with Al Ahly.

Since joining the club in early 2024, Abou Ali has been a revelation, netting crucial goals, including the opener in Al Ahly’s commanding 3-0 victory over Al Ain in the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup.

Speaking about the upcoming challenge, Abou Ali couldn’t hide his excitement. “It’s been an incredible nine months for me at Al Ahly,” Abou Ali told FIFA.com.

“Scoring goals and helping the team has been a dream. We respect Pachuca; they’re a strong side, but we’re determined to make it to the final. This tournament is massive, not just for the club but for the fans, and we’ll give it everything we’ve got.”

While Abou Ali represents the future of Al Ahly, captain and goalkeeper Mohamed Elshenawy embodies its steadfast tradition.

At 35, Elshenawy is playing in his fourth FIFA club tournament, bringing invaluable experience to the team.

“This competition means everything to us,” Elshenawy said.

“Al Ahly has a proud history in international tournaments, and it’s always an honour to represent the club on this stage. Our aim is clear: win the Challenger Cup, reach the final, and bring the title home.”

The match will be played at Doha’s iconic 974 Stadium, a venue Elshenawy knows well from Al Ahly’s 2021 FIFA Arab Cup campaign. “It’s a special place for us,” he said.

“The atmosphere is electrifying, especially with our fans. It gives us extra motivation to perform.”

For Abou Ali, playing at a FIFA World Cup stadium adds another layer of significance.

“It’s surreal,” he said. “This stage is where dreams come true. For some players, it’s their first time, and the hunger to perform is palpable. It’s going to be a spectacular match.”

With a mix of youthful energy and seasoned leadership, Al Ahly are poised to make a lasting impact in the tournament.
