High fog and bise (December 9, 2024)

Today, gray is the absolute fashion color when it comes to weather! As the week progresses, it will stay that way at low altitudes – the reason for this is high fog. On the mountains, however, the situation will improve massively from tomorrow.

Gray clouds, bise and insufficient rainfall

Today, Monday, the weather highlights are pretty limited. The sky remains essentially gray and cloudy, with relief most likely on Lake Geneva, Valais and Ticino. There are still a few in the afternoon, especially along the Alps unproductive rainfall with Flakes from 600 metersin the lowlands it is mostly dry. The real main character today, however, is her Vice. In the east it blows moderately, at Lake Geneva it blows strongly – here it reaches Gusts around 60 km/h. It further increases the feeling of cold, which is where the wind chill factor comes into play.

High fog-like clouds, sunny above

Morning Tuesday The influence of high pressure increases and the air becomes drier from above. Below around 1,800 meters, high fog-like clouds become widespread and you have to do without the sun again for the most part. On the higher mountains, however, the sun is already clearly in charge. Parts of Valais and Graubünden are in between. At the beginning, the high fog-like clouds are still pushing into Chablais and some valleys in Graubünden, but as the day progresses these swaths increasingly give way to the sun. In the lowlands there is hardly any daily variation in temperatures; it remains cold with only slightly plus degrees. The still moderate breeze makes it seem even colder. The skiing weather is very good in the mountains; with moderate easterly winds, temperatures range from -5 to -4 degrees at 2000 meters.

High fog below, sun above

This “gray below, blue above pattern” changes from Wednesday through Friday included few. The bise decreases from day to day and stops completely on Friday, which also causes it to decrease Hochnebelobergrenze from day to day. On Wednesday it still varies between 1300 and 1500 metersit’s up on Thursday 1100 to 1200 metersit finally sinks on Friday under 1000 meters. On Wednesday the high fog will be thick gray, on Thursday and Friday afternoon brightening is possible in some areas – but the fog will not really dissipate. It tends to get colder again, the temperature level is definitely wintery. The sun is shining above and outside the high fog, and a few cloud fields will temporarily pass through, especially on Wednesday. At higher altitudes, the temperature trend also shows a steady upward trend. On Wednesday it will still be slightly frosty at 2000 meters, on Thursday and Friday there will be temperatures around or slightly above freezing point. The wind is also not a major disruptive factor: up to and including Thursday it blows slightly to moderately from the east, on Friday it increasingly turns to the south. In total very good winter sports and excursion weather!

Clouds again this weekend

Am weekend The barometer still shows high surface air pressure, but there is an altitude trough. With it, moister and gradually colder air reaches us. From today’s perspective, Saturday will start frosty and foggy in some areas in the lowlands, while the sun will initially appear in the east. During the day the clouds will increase from the west and precipitation will spread. The snowfall limit is still somewhat uncertain and is between 500 and 1000 meters; in detail this depends on the wind and a possible cold air lake at low altitudes. On Sunday there will still be precipitation, especially on the central and eastern northern slopes of the Alps. It will continue to rain at low altitudes, and the expected amounts and intensities will be limited anyway. A new high then builds.
