Thanks to Latvia’s status as an Associate Member of ESA, Latvian companies and research institutes have the opportunity to obtain funding for the development of space technologies and solutions every year. The IZM said that 10 projects were approved in the fifth call for proposals for a total of €1.5 million.
One of the projects supported this year will test and then demonstrate the use of satellite data for remote detection of illegal construction activities and non-compliance.
One of the project’s cooperation partners is the State Construction Control Bureau, whose Director, Baiba Vītoliņa, pointed out that the project will become a fundamental component of modern and technologically advanced monitoring of the construction sector in Latvia.
The project will test both open-access Sentinel satellite data to identify construction-related land cover changes and high-resolution satellite data to verify information available in registers.
In the future, satellite data could be integrated into public services, according to the IZM.
The project will be implemented by the Institute for Environmental Solutions, Visma Consulting, Geodeticca (Slovakia) in cooperation with the State Control Office for Construction, the State Land Service and the Ogre Municipality. The users involved will have the opportunity to test the use of satellite data in daily monitoring, assess their suitability and suggest improvements.
