The Buffaloes have acquired an extra midfielder: Leonardo Lopes da Silva (26) was out of contract with Cercle Brugge last summer and is now transferring to AA Gent on a free transfer. The Portuguese central midfielder spent four seasons at the Bruges Association and was previously active at Hull City and Wigan, among others.
The physically strong Lopes da Silva also has a lot of footballing qualities and vista. Last season he was already in the interest of AA Gent and at the beginning of January – to the frustration of Cercle – even turned down a lucrative transfer to the MLS. He had set his sights on a top transfer to an English club in order to be able to play football closer to his family, who live in the United Kingdom.
A few months later, he now makes the switch to the Planet Group arena, where they have been looking for a ‘breaker’ for the midfield for some time. AA Gent hopes to prepare the versatile Lopes da Silva, who can also play as a right back or central defender, for the revival of the Jupiler Pro League after the short winter break. Lopes da Silva has signed a contract until June 2028. (ssg, kvu)
