LE FIGARO. – François Bayrou was named prime minister after eight days of waiting and a crazy morning. How to understand this political sequence ?
JÉRÔME JAFFRÉ. – To the feeling of political crisis for which the head of state is considered primarily responsible is added the vision of indecision and a standoff over appointments which weakens him even more. In the past, there have been difficult appointments (Couve de Murville, Cresson, Villepin for example) but this was played out behind the scenes. There, it was the French who were the sorry witnesses. This will not be without consequences on the cohesion of the Macronist bloc and in the country on its image and its audience.
Why this choice on the part of the president ? Can Bayrou benefit from sufficient support from the National Assembly? ?
The logic of Bayrou's choice was however strong and made him the favorite. It is a question of appointing a real political heavyweight, unlike the previous prime ministers of Emmanuel Macron, and of getting out of the clutches of the National Rally by seeking the neutrality of the socialists. The president finds himself more protected: if François Bayrou fails, it will first be failure…
