The red alert has been in effect since 10 p.m. in Mayotte before the arrival of Cyclone Chido. The authorities insisted on the violence of the phenomenon in a department particularly vulnerable to natural hazards. The message seems to have gotten through: the emergency accommodation centers in the municipalities are already full.
The emergency accommodation centers are already full in Mayotte, while the red alert was triggered at 10 p.m. this Friday in anticipation of the arrival during the night of Cyclone Chido. In Mamoudzou, nearly 2,000 residents were housed by the municipality at 10:30 p.m. Calls poured in shortly after 7 p.m., but the situation has been calm since. The agents even receive calls from residents of other municipalities wishing to find out about the situation.
In Petite-Terre, in Labattoir, 365 residents found refuge in the five centers of the commune. There is still space, and the teams say they are ready to welcome residents all night if necessary. A supply of water and food is planned this Saturday in the centers if conditions permit. Buses were specially rented to carry out this operation. The situation is opposite in Bandraboua where the centers are all or almost complete. The municipality is even considering opening a new accommodation center in Dzoumogné to cope with the influx of local residents.
Koungou also seems to have a high occupancy rate, with more than a thousand residents accommodated in the eight municipal centers, but also at Koungou college and Majicavo college. “Our fear is that some will not move and suffer the violent winds“, explains the general director of municipal services.
The commune of Bandrélé reports on its Facebook page that 700 people were accommodated in the 12 accommodation centers in the commune, with the exception of the Hajangoua Friday mosque which did not accommodate anyone according to the municipality's count.
Despite the dangerousness of the cyclone and the red alert, clashes between young people and the police were reported in Tsoundzou 1. Detonations were also heard in the Hauts-Vallons district, in Mamoudzou.
