François Bayrou is the new prime minister of France. After a long interview with Emmanuel Macron at the Elysée this morning, then a long wait, the press release finally came out. The name of the president of the Democratic Movement (Modem, center) was at the head of the list, with the former socialist Bernard Cazeneuve, since the fall of Michel Barnier’s government on December 5. But it was immediately rejected by certain parties or certain personalities, especially on the left.
Until today High Commissioner for Planning, he was received at length at the presidential palace, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. As the meeting continued, the appointment became more and more certain. Furthermore, the staging which took place in the morning, with a car trip by François Bayrou filmed from his home to the Elysée, also went in this direction. At the same time, his now predecessor Michel Barnier wrote by SMS to his ministers to thank them one last time and warn them that the transfer of power would take place by the end of the morning – it will finally be at 5 p.m. In Matignon, we even rolled out the red carpet, installed the microphones and the Republican Guard arrived. But a streak of doubt followed, because confirmation took two and a half hours to come. And speculation about a heated exchange between the two men and the use of Bernard Cazeneuve or Roland Lescure has once again circulated.
