Alain Pompidou, the last heir of a peaceful France

Alain Pompidou has died. The chance, happiness and honor were given to me more than three decades ago to work with him. The mark of this professor of medicine, one of the most recognized European parliamentarians of the 1990s, scientific advisor to Matignon as well, was that of his father and mother, Georges and Claude, from whom he had inherited the simplicity and intelligence of situations. , of the sense of real , he who also knew like the back of his hand the France of elites, culture, leaders and opinion leaders. He loved simple people and was never fooled by human comedies whose power is fruitful. With his skin-deep humor, he liked to make fun of it.

He was the man of another time, where people behaved, where modesty still served as a guide for public officials, where relaxation and vulgarity were not confused. Energetic, hardworking, curious mind, attentive to others, he brought science and technology into the decision-making spheres of the country with determination and consistency, notably at the end of the last century when he produced several reports which to the Prime Minister had the aim of 'alert decision-makers to the need to focus on issues as strategic as space or what was then called “information superhighways”. It was part of the great tradition of Gaullian France.

Meticulous curator of his parents' memory

Of politics, he loved the ability to act and was wary of intrigue. He knew its mysteries but kept his distance, even though he was elected. Above all, his ultimate vocation was to honor with exemplary piety the memory of his parents, of whom he became a meticulous and generous preserver. In blood and in soul, it was his way of perpetuating them and serving them, he who had accompanied his father in particular as close as possible to the dramas of power, including that of the illness which brutally took away the second president of the Fifth Republic.

It was exactly half a century, a strange sign of destiny, after the disappearance of Georges Pompidou that Alain Pompidou left in his turn. As if a loop were closing in a sort of escape for eternity, the son whose gaze sometimes bore witness to the cracks inherent in all life now joins his parents whom he loved so much and whose couple for many French people still evokes a peaceful, happy and unfortunately disappeared France. A past over which our friend watched over with the faith and conscience of guardians from whom nothing can distract the sense of duty.
