CD Projekt Red's next game (Cyberpunk 2077) was revealed at the Game Awards. “The Witcher 4” promises to be sumptuous and changes its habits by abandoning Geralt of Rivia as a witcher.
Formerly called Project Polaris, CD Projekt Red's next game will be aptly named The Witcher 4. The Polish studio, to which we also owe Cyberpunk 2077revealed the first images of the game during the Game Awards ceremony. Surprise, no witcher here, but a witcher now.
The trailer begins in a village where a father is preparing to sacrifice his only daughter. One of the residents spots what he believes to be a witcher. But it won't be Geralt of Rivia, the usual hero of the saga, under the hood. Instead, spectators were able to discover Ciri, his adopted daughter whom he takes in, protects and trains. A character that many also discovered in the series adaptation of the literary work on Netflix, notably with Henry Cavill in the main role.
It is therefore the princess of Cintra who will go into battle in this 4th episode where we see her fighting with a gigantic monster with multiple arms. The young girl will be the playable character and resembles physically and temperamentally what we imagine she could have become. We see her twirl and wield the sword with dexterity, while using her witcher powers. In the trailer, she comes to the aid of another young girl, Mioni, whom she tries to save before she cannot seem to escape her destiny.
A nod to Geralt of Rivia
Running under Unreal Engine 5, The Witcher 4 amazed the audience with its beauty and realism. Players have been waiting for a sequel to the successful The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt for almost 10 years. According to the creators of the game interviewed by IGN, this new opus will take place years after the events of The Witcher 3. Ciri now has her armor, her sword and her medallion, but above all her ability to become more than human, the result of a rite of passage for any recognized witcher.
A little wink for fans of the saga. This first game where Ciri appears as the protagonist echoes the very first The Witcher. If she kills a Bauk here, it's a Striga that Geralt killed in the opening scene. And in the same way: with a silver chain. “There are no gods here, there are only monsters,” says Ciri in the trailer, just to set the tone: she will be merciless.
Announced in spring 2022, the next opus of The Witcher will not be the only one. Four games in total are planned for development, including a remake.
