VHere's a chilling statement: that of Mark Rutte, the Secretary General of NATO. This Thursday, he painted a chilling picture of the situation. A painting that prohibits any naivety. “It’s time to shift to a wartime mindset,” he said; calling on Member States to mobilize to “prevent the next great war” on Alliance soil. He is categorical: “The danger is approaching us at high speed. »And the first danger is the Russian threat.
This warning resonates all the more as it comes at the very moment when Ukraine is on a tightrope. In February, if it still holds out, it will have been three years of resisting the Russian ogre. In the absence of victory, he changed his mind and opted for the strategy of cannon fodder, convinced that numbers will end up making the difference. Despite this abject “meat grinder” method, the facts prove him right: Moscow is sinking into the Ukrainian defenses. And although the losses are colossal on both sides, kyiv today appears out of breath, exhausted, bruised, bleeding and potentially short of ammunition and fighters.
We can regret this militarist vision, but it is undeniable that imperialist desires are awakening
It is in the light of this violence that we must understand the NATO boss's call for lucidity. And this one requires us to look beyond Ukraine. Because, if the Kremlin had to let go of Syria so as not to disperse its forces, elsewhere the lines are also moving. China continues to develop its capabilities, Iran dreams of a nuclear bomb, North Korea increases its provocations…
Faced with this dangerous tectonic, Mark Rutte sees only one solution: invest more in the defense industry. We can regret this militarist vision, but it is undeniable that imperialist inclinations are awakening. In this regard, yes, Europe and its democracies are a turning point. However, these are fragile. How can we not be worried after the cancellation of the presidential election in Romania amid suspicions of Russian interference? How can we not also worry about the situation in Georgia, where demonstrations are increasing against the government, accused of pro-Russian authoritarian drift? A start is all the more necessary because if Donald Trump disengages from NATO and closes the American umbrella, the Alliance countries will find themselves alone. And it's not the rain we have to fear. This debate deserves to be held.
