ChatGPT back online after global outage, OpenAI says ’we’ve recovered’

OpenAI’s artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT is back online five hours after facing a global outage. Taking to X, OpenAI wrote, “ChatGPT, API, and Sora were down today but we’ve recovered.”

This came after the chatbot faced significant outages, preventing millions of users worldwide from accessing it. OpenAI had taken to social media and said, “We’re experiencing an outage right now. We have identified the issue and are working to roll out a fix. Sorry and we’ll keep you updated!” Social media was filled with wide range of reactions right from jokes to jibes, and humour to irritation.

Last month, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had apologised on X after ChatGPT went down for 30 minutes. As per outage tracking website Downdetector, over 19,000 people were impacted due to the unavailability of chatbot. In a post on X admitting the outage, Altman had said the company was much better at reliability than it used to be but there is still a lot more work to do.

Apple adds ChatGPT in latest update

Earlier on Wednesday, Tech giant Apple rolled out major updates to its artificial intelligence offerings that integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its native applications, including Siri, on the iPhone. In a notable shift for the privacy-focused company, Apple has partnered with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its Writing Tools and Siri virtual assistant, allowing users of the latest iPhone or iPad to access the AI chatbot without leaving Apple’s ecosystem.

Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook face global outage

This ChatGPT outage came just a day after Meta’s flagship platforms—Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook faced widespread outages. Meta too acknowledged the issues and addressed them on its official X account, “We’re aware that a technical issue is impacting some users’ ability to access our apps. We’re working to resolve it as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience.”
