Birmančevic surprises with ritual, called Weghorst

An incredibly strange moment in the warm-up of the Champions League match between Feyenoord and Sparta Prague. Veljko Birmančevic caused surprised looks with his ritual just before the match.

The visitors’ attacker stepped onto the field with his bare feet, with bath slips in his hand. In the meantime, he stood still on the grass, wearing his earphones. Although it is chilly in Rotterdam, Birmančevic did not move an inch while the sprinklers did their work.

“We film everything here, of course. The number fourteen of Sparta Prague, Veljko Birmančevic. It is three degrees Celsius above 0, the sprinklers are on and the gentleman is standing on the field with his ears in and shoes off,” Wytse van der Goot mocks at Ziggo Sport. Royston Drenthe has no idea what he sees: “My God,” the former football player responds in surprise.

Drenthe: ‘I have never seen this before’

“We are seeing more and more, but it is getting crazier,” says Pierre van Hooijdonk. “He’s actually standing under those sprinklers! Like it’s nothing. Man, man, man… I’m curious what his story is behind this,” says Drenthe. “Apparently he needs it,” says Van der Goot. “I mean this seriously: I have never seen this in my life,” Drenthe concludes.

‘Wout Weghorst’ at Feyenoord – Sparta Prague

Several football fans immediately think of Ajax striker Wout Weghorst when they hear Birmančevic’s action. The attacker caused a stir in November with his match preparations. Weghorst read against PSV prior to the game a book and against FC Twente he looked like lawn caretaker to go. Comments about Weghorst appear on X:
