Two catering chalets at the Bordeaux Christmas market were reduced to ashes shortly before the official opening time of the aisles to the public, this Wednesday.
A fire broke out in a catering chalet at the Bordeaux Christmas market this Wednesday. Called at 10:01 a.m., the Gironde firefighters had to use two hoses and mobilize 19 firefighters to extinguish the flames before they spread further to the Place des Quinconces. The Edelweiss and the burger stand next to it were reduced to ashes. According to our sources, the fire was accidental and started in the kitchen of one of them.
The fire, extinguished around midday, started while the aisles of the Christmas market were still lightly traveled, because they did not open to the public until 11 a.m. Two exhibitors, slightly injured, were treated by the firefighters. The first, aged 29, is the owner of one of the two chalets reduced to ashes. He had burned his fingers trying to put out the fire. The second, aged 39, is a trader who runs one of the neighboring chalets. He had been bothered by the fumes. Neither had to be taken to hospital.
Pierre Hurmic, the mayor of Bordeaux, visited the Christmas market to meet the exhibitors. Closed for a few hours to clean up the damage, the premises will be accessible to the public again from 5 p.m., indicates the municipality.
