Exit the areas dotted here and there. Apart from a few major roads, the city of will be placed in zone 30. The measure was announced at the beginning of April 2024 on the occasion of the presentation of the calming plan for the city of Tours. It will be effective from 1is January 2025. “We want to complete the work we have been doing for a long time and simplify things”explains Emmanuel Denis, mayor of Tours.

The City motivates this decision by road safety requirements. “There is a six-fold increase in the severity of accidents when the speed increases from 30 to 50. We want to promote pedestrian safetyspecifies the mayor of Tours. If a pedestrian is 13 m in front of a motorist traveling at 30 km/h, the car will have time to stop”adds Armelle Gallot-Lavallée, municipal councilor responsible for road safety issues.

Boulevards at 30 km/h

If 80% of the city was already in zone 30, this measure will still have concrete consequences, particularly on the main roads. Vehicles circulating on the André-Malraux and Paul-Bert quays, Heurteloup and Béranger boulevards, rue Mirabeau as well as part of rue Daniel-Mayer must not exceed 30 km/h.

An ambitious measure in view of the number of cars circulating on these structuring axes of the city and which can be the scene of speed enthusiasts. “In Heurteloup and Béranger, vehicles traveling at more than 50 km/h are marginal,” assures Nicolas Galdeano, director of municipal police and public peace. Beyond 30 km/h, motorists and motorcyclists will have to pay a fine of €135.

Initially, the City relies on education and public information to enforce the measure. Road markings indicating the authorized speed have already sprung up across the city. “Municipal police officers know how to combine education and repression”explained Nicolas Galdeano.

Improve quality of life

In addition to an improvement in road safety, Emmanuel Denis hopes that the measure will “improve the quality of life of residents with more peaceful spaces. This measure has a positive environmental impact because with a stable speed, there is a reduction in pollution. »

Also note that zones 30 have the advantage of being two-way for bicycles. A great tip for the City, which wants to “promote active mobility” like cycling. A mode of travel that will more than compete with the car. Armelle Gallot-Lavallée makes no mistake: “A trip of less than 6 km is quicker to do by bike. » Meet at 1is January 2025.
